Go to the shanty town area and speak with the guy who is in the hut where 2 people are standing by a fire. He will give you a code and you will get 175 skill points. You can now use 2700 skill points to upgrade your skill level in weapons: low-tech to advanced. Ignore the locked box in one of the other huts. Also don’t buy any ammo from the older bum outside. Go down into the subway station and use the code on the keypad in the telephone booth. Make your way along the secret tunnel.

Go round behind the lift shaft and up the ladder. Kill the NSF terrorist sniper on this roof and take his 3 +/- 3 rounds of 30.06 ammo. You will find 12 rounds of 30.06 ammo on the rooftop, leave the ballistic armour. There is another ladder leading up onto a higher roof from this one. Walk over to the base of the ladder and you will get 30 skill points. Climb the ladder and go across to the far side of the next rooftop where you will find a ladder leading down the side of the building. Go all the way down to the ground and then disarm and pick up the 1 LAM which is on the wall down there. Now climb back to the roof again. There is another ladder leading off this roof which should be on your left. Go down this one and then enter the building through the window you find next to the ladder by smashing the glass. As you go along the hallway you will receive another 30 skill points. Leave through the window again and keep going down the steps. One of the levels is broken here and you will have to jump down until you are on the rooftop below. Kill the NSF terrorist here and find 6 rounds of 10mm ammo in the crate. Try not to let the sniper on the roof above hear you doing this, or he will throw a LAM down at you. Now go up the ladder on the West side of this roof and kill the NSF terrorist. You can take 3 +/- 3 rounds of 30.06 ammo from him and 0-1 LAMs (depending on whether he just tried to blow you up with it or not). One of the crates contains 6 rounds of 30.06 ammo. Now use the advertisement board to cross to the neighbouring rooftop and kill the NSF terrorist there too. His body has 3 +/- 3 rounds of 30.06 ammo on it. There is a datacube on some steps nearby. Now return to the lower roof of the previous building you were on by jumping down to it using the plank in the corner of this roof and the chimney below as a step so you don’t take any damage in the drop.

Don’t give the hooker any money if she asks for some. As you approach the stairs Paul will run down to meet you. He gives you 4 prod charger rounds and a nanokey. Hack the ATM on the station to withdraw 786 credits. When you exit the subway you will see some steps to your immediate right. There will be 3 dead bodies there. One of them is carrying 1 bioelectric cell. Turn to the East and go through the gap in the fence. There are some thugs intimidating a bum here. As soon as the 2 NSF thugs begin to attack the bum, kill them, making sure the bum survives. One of them will provide you with 6 +/- 6 buckshot rounds. Now talk to the bum, he will give you some valuable information. Go North through a narrow passage and you will find 2 storage containers. Load your mini-crossbow with darts using the inventory screen (instead of the default tranquilizer darts) and you can fire these at the doors of the containers to break them open. The darts can then be retrieved afterwards. You can also fire flare darts into the containers afterwards if you find they are too dark to see clearly inside. Flare darts can be recovered just like the standard darts too, except they run out after 60 seconds.

Use the ladder by the boat to leave the water again. Go up the steps to the East on the left. If the boy asks for some food don’t give him anything. Turn to the left and go through the first gap in the wall there. You should see Castle Clinton ahead of you. Go around the castle and you should find a crate by the West wall of the map. It contains 6 rounds of 10mm ammo. Keep going around the castle until you meet Anna with some other UNATCO troopers. There will be another crate by the castle’s entrance containing 12 buckshot rounds. Before entering the castle, go towards the Northeastern corner of the map. If you approach the huts there the NSF terrorists will begin to fight with the UNATCO troopers, usually resulting in all of them dying except for 1 of the UNATCO trooers, as far as I can tell. According to the aims in the introduction, you should prevent any UNATCO troopers being killed using as little ammo as possible. I haven’t managed to do this without using any ammo at all yet (let me know if you can find a way), but if you aim carefully with 1 gas grenade near the 4 NSF terrorists this will allow the UNATCO troopers to take them all out without having a single casualty of their own. Despite this, one of the UNATCO troopers is likely to say to you: ‘we lost some of our men’ incorrectly after the fighting! The dead bodies will provide you with 9 +/- 9 rounds of 10mm ammo and 2 +/- 2 tranquilizer darts.

Once everything is to your liking we can begin. Choose to start a new game, and select ‘realistic’ as the difficulty. Decide on a player name and appearance for yourself, and then select which skills to start the game with. You begin with 5000 skill points at your disposal. Referring to the analysis of goals for the game in the introduction you will be upgrading the computer skill first. However, begin by downgrading weapons: pistol from trained to untrained to gain a further 1575 skill points. Then upgrade computer to advanced level, using 3175 skill points. You might notice that when you enter the game you are in fact still trained with the pistol. Therefore this could be considered a cheat, by making use of a bug in the game. However downgrading the pistol was perfectly acceptable and the intention was to get more points to upgrade the computer skill sooner, besides we don’t really care whether the pistol skill is trained or untrained as you won’t be using the pistol much at all. So in these circumstances I don’t think this should be considered a cheat. However I have also heard that this only happens on certain computer configurations. If you find that your pistol is untrained when you start the game don’t despair because this is how it should be, and like I said it won’t make any difference since you won’t use the pistol much. Also upgrade your skill in weapons: low-tech from untrained to trained, using 1350 skill points. Now click on ‘start game’.

This is not like most other Deus Ex walkthroughs. The majority that I have come across tend to show you how to complete the mission objectives and ultimately complete the game by pointing out where the critical locations can be found and outlining how to get there, perhaps suggesting alternatives depending on what items and skills you have available. On the other hand, this walkthrough goes into complete detail of exactly which items to pick up from where, how to get all the bonus points and more, all with the purpose of fulfilling certain aims as well as possible. Of course this results in the walkthrough becoming very specific and it often won’t help you if you have chosen alternative options earlier in the game. This also means that the walkthrough is very long! Indeed many of the things I tell you to do will have no impact on the storyline, or even acquiring items, but are simply mentioned for total completeness in the playing of the game. The particular aims I have chosen to strive for with this walkthrough are those which comprise my preferred style of playing the game. These objectives are listed below, the first ones taking priority over those below them:
